This post is in a series where we talk to healthcare interior designers about their work and industry. Lilliana Alvarado is Founder and Design Principal of UPHEALING and is certified by the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID).
I remember watching Erik Weihenmayer as a keynote speaker at a conference. It was early in my career, and I still think of his talk when adversity strikes. It reminds me to take those moments and turn them into something great.
I am excited about textiles with enhanced finishes for durability that are non-toxic.
Textiles are a way to bring softness into a space, and it’s extremely difficult to specify them if they will not withstand harsh hospital-grade disinfectants.
Many times I see spaces cluttered with everyday items that were not taken into consideration during the design process and then get placed in unwanted locations. I like to keep clutter to a minimum by providing concealed storage solutions or a place for everything that will remain in order. Bringing nature in also helps to bring a certain calmness to a space.
I would tell my younger self to not be so hard on myself. Actually, I still need to be reminded of this.
Bedding that is safe to use in behavioral health environments that also has a residential or hospitality feel.
We've also talked to Michelle Clark (REES Associates), Jennifer Fink (BDA Architects), Lindsay Hampton (Pulse Design Group), Melinda Avila-Torio (THW Design), Ashleigh Pfluger (TJNG Partners), Jane Rohde (JSR Associates), John DuBard (Boulder Associates), Lisa Cini (Mosaic Design Studio), Susan Clark (Clark Patterson Lee), Crystal Hill (Odell Associates), Dr. Debra Harris (RAD Consultants), Libby Laguta (L2D.design), Kristin Ellingsen (Office Furniture Group), Kimberly Bernheimer (PF&A Design), Melissa Perry (Inventure), Kelley Dorsett (HDR), Christin Troutman (MCA), Keith Stanton (Thoma-Holec Design), and Clairanne Pesce (Array Architects).
