This post is in a series where we talk to healthcare interior designers about their work as interior designers in the healthcare market. Lisa Cini is the owner of Mosaic Design Studio and is certified by the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID).

What is one book, person, or talk that has been most influential in your career?

Too many to name. I read constantly, and I am in several business coaching masterminds such as EO, Strategic Coach, and Genius Network.

But the book The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande provided reasoning to why checklists are so important, especially when you need to engage in creative problem solving. Creating a checklist eliminates the guesswork on the work that should be done, which frees me and my team up for more creative work.

What products have you been excited about recently?

I am very excited about the integration between technology, health, and design. Some examples are floors that will data mine information and help to identify issues or call for help, lighting that helps to regulate your sleep cycle, and specialty glass that can provide privacy or be clear helping to make interiors more flexible and dynamic.

Do you have any go-to design solutions or techniques for creating healing environments?

Noise reduction is number one on my list to help create a healing environment. Utilizing acoustic wall and ceiling materials that can also be printed on so that they can be utilized as healing art are fantastic for reducing agitation while healing.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

Everyone has different gifts and talents. Appreciate yours and do more of what you're gifted at instead of focusing on getting better at your weaknesses.

What is one product that doesn't exist but should?

Computer screen/display screen that is wall covering. It could be used for education, artwork, murals, or entertainment. This integration would make walls more beautiful and functional and increase our ability to heal and connect.

We've also talked to Michelle Clark (REES Associates), Jennifer Fink (BDA Architects), Lindsay Hampton (Pulse Design Group), Melinda Avila-Torio (THW Design), Lilliana Alvarado (UPHEALING), Ashleigh Pfluger (TJNG Partners Inc.), Jane Rohde (JSR Associates), John DuBard (Boulder Associates), Susan Clark (Clark Patterson Lee), Crystal Hill (Odell Associates), Dr. Debra Harris (RAD Consultants), Libby Laguta (L2D.design), Kristin Ellingsen (Office Furniture Group), Kimberly Bernheimer (PF&A Design), Melissa Perry (Inventure), Kelley Dorsett (HDR), Christin Troutman (MCA), Keith Stanton (Thoma-Holec Design), and Clairanne Pesce (Array Architects).
